From: Victoria Mine, La Rioja, Navajún, Spain
Size: 22 x 15.5 x 12.5cm
Small pyrite cubes on matrix are fairly common, but large examples like this are hard to find, especially in this condition with this level of aesthetics. This superb specimen from the Victoria Mine in Spain stands on its own, and has a single very large cube of shiny, golden pyrite. The pyrite cube itself measures 5.3 x 5.2 x 6.0cm in size!!! The edges and corners are sharp and perfect. The faces shine like mirrors. In the photos you see the surface crystal grown patterns, but that's mainly due to the bright lights used to take the images. In person, however, you don't see that and the cube is like a mirror.
These Spanish pyrites are some of the world's most amazing mineral specimens, and people often think they are man-made. But these perfect cubes are completely natural and grow like this all on their own. They're made of iron and sulphur, and the world's best pyrites come from Spain, specifically, the Victoria Mine in Navajun.
