Back in the 70's and 80's there were rhodochrosite specimens being found in Gabon, and this is one of them. However, this one is rather exceptional due to it's size and coverage of rhodochrosite. The entire face is covered with the crystals with very little exposed manganese. The crystals are a slightly orangish-red color very similar to the kinds of rhodochrosite specimens that come out of Peru. There are several florettes plus finer crystal areas and larger crystal areas. Overall condition is quite good. This is really the best Gabon Rhodochrosite specimen on the market today!
Normally, when we receive a specimen mounted like this we would remove it from the base and create a new one for it. However, in this case, the old base adds character since it has an old label on it. The specimen is hot-glued to it, but can easily be removed with rubbing alcohol should you want to make a modern base for it.
